The opportunity is bigger than code generation
AI-assisted development is changing how software teams work. Tools such as Cursor, Claude Code, OpenAI Codex and GitHub Copilot can help engineers explore codebases, draft implementations, create tests and explain unfamiliar components. Used well, they reduce the friction around routine tasks and give experienced developers more time to focus on difficult decisions.
But speed at the keyboard is not the same as speed to a successful outcome. The work that determines whether software succeeds—understanding requirements, designing interfaces, managing risk and supporting users—still needs deliberate attention.
Where AI tools add practical value
We see the strongest opportunities in well-bounded activities where an engineer can quickly evaluate the output. Examples include drafting unit tests for established behaviour, generating repetitive integration code, preparing documentation and exploring alternative implementations.
AI can also accelerate early prototyping. A working prototype makes it easier to test assumptions with stakeholders before committing to a production architecture. A prototype, however, is not automatically a secure, maintainable product.
The safeguards that matter
Our approach is to treat AI-generated code like any other untrusted contribution. It must be reviewed, tested and understood by the engineers responsible for it. That includes checking error handling, dependency choices, performance and security implications.
Client information also deserves careful handling. Before using an AI service with source code or data, a team should review contractual terms, access controls, data retention settings and any applicable confidentiality or regulatory requirements.
How to evaluate the benefit
Rather than promise a fixed percentage improvement, measure outcomes: lead time for a feature, defect rates, time spent on rework and the quality of the resulting software. Some tasks may become significantly quicker; others will not.
The right question for a client is not “Which AI coding tool do you use?” It is “How will your delivery approach give us reliable software, clear accountability and sensible value for money?”
Our view at SMD Solutions
We combine experienced engineering judgement with modern AI-assisted workflows where they are appropriate. We choose tools around the work, not the other way around, and maintain human ownership of architecture, security, testing and delivery.
If you are considering a new application, a modernisation project or an AI-enabled product, we can help you assess the opportunities and define a delivery approach that fits your requirements.
