Start with the work, not the location
A team model should follow the nature of the project. A discovery-heavy engagement with many stakeholders may benefit from close working-hour alignment. A well-defined engineering backlog may be delivered effectively by specialists across locations.
Choosing the cheapest hourly rate without considering communication, quality assurance and management overhead can be a false economy. The more useful comparison is total delivery cost and the confidence you have in the outcome.
When UK-based developers are a good fit
UK-based engineers can be valuable where frequent stakeholder workshops, rapid decision-making and close coordination are important. They may also be preferable where a client has particular contractual, operational or on-site requirements.
Location alone does not establish skill or compliance. Assess technical ability, availability, delivery experience and the specific requirements of the engagement.
When international developers make sense
International engineering specialists can expand access to skills and provide flexibility when scaling a team. This can be particularly useful for defined development workstreams or when a client needs a broader range of expertise.
Plan for time-zone overlap, documentation, clear ownership and consistent engineering standards. These are management responsibilities, not problems that disappear by choosing a different location.
Why blended teams can work well
A blended model can combine UK-based technical leadership or stakeholder-facing roles with international specialists delivering agreed workstreams. When responsibilities are clear, this can balance collaboration, capacity and commercial flexibility.
A blended team still needs one delivery plan, one approach to code quality and one accountable point of contact. Otherwise, the client is left coordinating several disconnected groups.
Questions to ask before engaging a team
Who owns architecture and technical decisions? How will progress be reported? What is the expected overlap in working hours? How are code reviews, testing and security handled? Who owns the intellectual property and what happens during handover?
These questions are more revealing than a list of CVs. A strong partner should be able to explain how the team will operate, not simply who is available.
How SMD Solutions approaches team design
We offer UK-based, international and blended engineering arrangements according to the project’s requirements. We focus on matching capability to the work and agreeing the operating model up front.
Whether you need an individual specialist, a dedicated delivery team or support for an existing engineering function, the starting point is a conversation about outcomes, responsibilities and constraints.
